Monday tid-bits

January 20, 2020 by Marian Sayer

I’m in a bit of a personal rut that I know will pass, but is still a rut nonetheless.

We did a hard but necessary thing recently and it’s got me emotionally drained. It’s exhausting and I haven’t put anything “out there” on my corners of the internet in a bit because I’ve felt pretty lousy and wiped out. It’s starting to recede and while the recharge process is slow and frustrating to me sometimes, progress is being made.

I wanted to share some fun links and tid-bits with you today, just to have a place to put them besides the never read notes page filled with links I have on my laptop. Maybe one of these articles or lists will spark a brain wave for you, bring you delight, or be something you want to share with a friend.

Monday tid-bits:

  • If you enjoy strong opinions, you won’t want to miss this roundup of The Most Scathing Reviews of 2019. They’re catty, cleverly written, and definitely will spark a response in your face. And while The Mister, by E.L. James, gets ripped apart pretty heavily, it’s worth noting that the Fifty Shades of Grey series was a huge moment for books this past decade. Romance is publishing’s most prolific and successful genre and lots of people still don’t recognize it as legitimate. Additionally, that series alone was responsible for keeping bookstores open and giving EVERY employee of Random House a $5,000 bonus. Yes, that is the correct number.

  • A collection of most anticipated of 2020 books lists here, here, here, here, here, and here, have had me filling up my library holds with some really interesting things.

  • This list of book related resolutions is good. I am trying to read my shelves more and have more fun with my reading this year. Did you make reading resolutions or goals?

  • I want this shirt.

  • This video about organizing is lovely and is what I remember when I need to “reframe the narrative” around chores and my to-do list.

  • And for something completely different, I thought this look at the architecture of research buildings in Antartica was really cool.

So far my reading game for 2020 is off to a decent start. I flew through this book last weekend and thought it was just as brilliant as everyone has been saying (a rare thing that I agree with or get swept up in the hype).

Also, I’m working my way through this book, and this book, both of which I’m enjoying but also am relishing taking time to read instead of just blowing through them. It feels nice to savor the words and the story for a change and pause and think while I’m reading. Both books are a little heavier in content and seem to require something from me more than a thriller does. I am appreciating that give and take and magic duality or writer/reader from these two books.

I’d love to hear what you’ve been up to lately, feel free to share!
