Celebrity Book Club Update: May 2022
Welp, it’s May already, summer is right around the corner, so grab some of these to take with you to the beach, or to read whenever you wanna, you do you. Enjoy!
Reese Witherspoon X Hello Sunshine - The Dictionary of Lost Words, by Pip Williams - A book about books, women’s suffrage, and how language can help you find power, connection, and strength.
Belletrist (Emma Roberts) - The Candy House, by Jennifer Egan - I haven’t read A Visit to the Good Squad yet but have heard this is vaguely connected. The description makes it sound like an amazing literary adventure with structures I am eager to get into. The cover has my expectations high because I am a sucker for a pretty design.
Read with Jenna (Jenna Bush Hager) - Remarkably Bright Creatures, by Shelby Van Pelt - I’m interested in this also. It sounds like a combination of a character study, a bit of mystery, self discovery, and like one of those cool books that make you feel more human and connected to the planet through the inclusion of the animal kingdom in the plot. The plot of this one involves a woman who starts working at an aquarium, forms a friendship or sorts with an octopus, and works to unravel the disappearance of her son.
GMA Book Club - The Change, by Kristen Miller - Three women work together to try to solve a mystery, guided by the voices of ghosts that only one of the three women can hear. I’m interested in this because middle aged women are rarely given the center of a plot. I am nervous about it because the mystery involves a series of dead girls and I have a very hard time when violence against women is used as a plot device. I might look up more about it before digging in, but it does sound like a compelling read.
Goop Book Club - Little Rabbit, by ALyssa Songsiridej - A coming of age novel between an unnamed narrator who is an artist in residence, and a choreographer who seems to elicit feelings in the narrator that she struggles to understand.
Ashley Spivey’s Book Club - Book Lovers, by Emily Henry - I just finished listening to this and it was a ton of fun. Pretty easy on the spice level, but a charming story about the girl left behind in the hallmark movie trope. I thought the issues the characters go through were genuinely reflected and felt like a new combination to the genre (for my reading record at least). The ending felt satisfying even if the final conflict for the two of them to overcome was not my favorite plot point. The chemistry these two characters have is wonderful. The banter is electric, and the story is a whole lot of fun. If you like books about book lovers that kiss, stories with New York involved in any way, or the exploration of sister relationships and the life changes that happen as adults, this is one you might also enjoy. Would be great for a plane, trip to the beach, or a vacation from anywhere.
